In-home newborn photography is a beautiful and intimate way to document the early days of baby's life in a familiar, comfortable environment. Unlike studio sessions, these lifestyle photo sessions take place in the family's home offering a cozy and personal touch to your images, with emphasis on comfort, authenticity and natural family connections.

Why choose Lifestyle Newborn Photography?

  1. Comfort & Convenience: Perhaps you're not ready to pack up your new baby along with the rest of your family (and a thousand things in tow). New parents and babies remain in a stress-free environment without the need for travel.
  2. Authenticity: Captures the real-life moments in the baby's first home, adding sentimental value.
  3. Soft, Natural Aesthetic: Often utilizing natural light and home settings, creating a warm, timeless feel. Ideal areas of the home in which to photograph include nursery, master bedroom, kitchen, living room and outdoors.
  4. Personal Touch: Incorporates meaningful details like the nursery, family heirlooms and pets.

Best time for an in-home newborn session?

  1. First 2 Weeks of Life: In-home Lifestyle Newborn Sessions are typically scheduled within the first 5 to 14 days after birth. This helps ensure being able to capture the newborn's sleepy, curled up poses.
  2. A Few Months of Age: While super new babies are the ideal capture, it's not to say these sessions can't take place later on! Life is blessed and wonderful after a baby is born but it can also be a bit challenging and overwhelming. You're adjusting to life with a new life! You're recovering from labor and at your most vulnerable. If a photo shoot isn't on your immediate list of priorities post-baby (though it should be as those little newborn moments disappear in the blink of an eye!), newborn lifestyle sessions can take place up to a few months old as well. When babies are a bit older, we typically focus more on those sweet interactions and expressions as they are much more alert and meeting new milestones!

What to expect during the session?

  1. Light & Space Considerations: Photographers will typically look for areas of ample, natural light (near windows, on the bed or in the nursery).
  2. Baby-Led Posing: Unlike studio sessions with more structured poses, in-home lifestyle photography embraces baby's natural movements and comfort.
  3. Family Involvement: Parents, siblings and even pets (whether it be the family pup or your bearded dragon!) can be included to create genuine, heartfelt moments.
  4. Minimal Props: The focus is on simplicity, use of sentimental blankets/outfits, soft/neutral tones and personal items from your home. With that being said, I always bring a couple of props and wraps should you decide you'd like some posed & wrapped photos as well.

How to prepare for an in-home newborn session?

  1. Keep Your Home Warm: Babies are most comfortable and relaxed in a warm, cozy environment. Best to dress accordingly.
  2. Declutter Key Areas: Perfection is absolutely NOT necessary! However, a small area with a tidy background will go a long way for your images and will help maintain focus on the baby and your family.
  3. Dressing in Soft, Neutral Tones: Light, neutral colors help create a soft, timeless look. Creams and whites are a great choice and are less likely to clash with home decor, walls and the overall color scheme of your home.
  4. Feed Baby Beforehand: A well-fed, sleepy baby is a happy baby! This will help to ensure a smooth, seamless session.
  5. Be Patient & Relaxed: The best moments happen naturally! Sweet cuddles, gentle hugs & kisses and cute little yawns are all examples of the beautiful candids we'll aim to capture. And be sure to allocate time for feedings and diaper changes!
